Afrochella, now known as AfroFuture, is a cultural event held annually in Ghana, mainly in Accra, around the Christmas and end-of-year period. Launched in 2017, it was conceived as a space connecting contemporary African cultures with African diasporas, particularly those based in Europe and North America.

From the outset, Afrochella was designed as a multi-disciplinary festival bringing together music, visual arts, food culture and creative entrepreneurship. Its stated ambition was to provide a platform for modern African cultural expressions while encouraging economic and cultural exchanges between the continent and its diasporas. Ghana’s selection reflects its political stability, its historical role in pan-African movements, and its policy of engagement with Afro-descendants, notably through the “Year of Return” initiative launched in 2019.

The festival typically unfolds over several days, featuring concerts, art exhibitions, food spaces and discussions focused on innovation and the cultural industries. Most participating artists come from Africa and the African diaspora, with particular attention given to urban and alternative music scenes. Alongside performances, Afrochella has gradually expanded to include content related to entrepreneurship, creative technologies and emerging African brands.

Over successive editions, Afrochella has helped shape what is now widely referred to as “December in Accra,” a period during which Ghana’s capital hosts a growing number of cultural events, festivals and professional gatherings. This end-of-year concentration has contributed to a rise in tourist arrivals, especially among members of the African diaspora, with visible effects on hospitality, food services and transportation sectors.

In 2022, the organisers announced a rebranding, with Afrochella becoming AfroFuture. The name change was intended to broaden the project beyond a single festival format, positioning it as a wider cultural platform capable of operating in other African and international cities. Despite this shift, the Accra event continues to be widely identified by its original name, particularly in media coverage and public discourse.
