The African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council announced on October 15 the immediate suspension of Madagascar from all activities of the Union, its organs, and institutions, until constitutional order is restored in the country.
In its statement, the Council “strongly condemns the military seizure of power” and “categorically rejects the unconstitutional change” of government in the island nation.
The AU demanded that the armed forces urgently and unconditionally respect constitutional principles and refrain from further interference in the country’s political process. It warned that sanctions could be imposed on all actors involved in the “military coup.”
For several weeks, Madagascar has been facing social unrest driven by protests over water and electricity cuts, which have quickly turned into a political movement. These events led to the dismissal of President Andry Rajoelina by a parliamentary vote and the army’s takeover on October 14.
To restore constitutional order, the AU calls for the establishment of a civilian transitional government and the organization of free and fair elections as soon as possible. The AU Commission has been tasked to work closely with the Southern African Development Community (SADC) on a coordinated response.
