Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan appointed a new cabinet on Monday, Nov. 17, 2025. The line-up includes 27 ministers and 29 deputy ministers and marks a major reshuffle after her election victory.
The overhaul saw seven ministers removed, including former Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Doto Biteko and former Justice Minister Damas Ndumbaro.
Khamis Mussa Omar, Tanzania’s former ambassador to China and a former Bank of Tanzania director, was appointed finance minister, replacing Mwigulu Nchemba, who became prime minister on Nov. 13.
Other key picks were Rhimo Nyansaho as defence minister and George Boniface Simbachawene as home affairs minister. Mahmoud Thabit Kombo kept his foreign affairs portfolio, while Anthony Peter Mavunde remained minerals minister.
Notably, the president’s son-in-law, Mohamed Mchengerwa, was appointed health minister, and her daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, became deputy education minister.
The new cabinet comes after Hassan’s inauguration on Nov. 3, 2025, following her landslide win with 97.7% of the vote in the Oct. 29 presidential election.
Local media describe the reshuffle as one of the biggest changes under Hassan, framing it as a move to bring in new faces while retaining experienced lawmakers in Parliament.
Tanzania continues to post strong economic growth. The IMF estimates real GDP grew 5.5% in 2024 and projects 6% for 2025. Inflation was 3.5% in October, according to the National Bureau of Statistics, staying below the Bank of Tanzania’s 5% target.
