TAAG expands in East Africa with new Luanda–Nairobi connection

  • TAAG will open a Luanda–Nairobi route with three weekly flights.
  • The airline aims to triple passenger traffic to 3 million annually by 2030.

  • TAAG, now profitable, is central to Angola’s aviation and economic strategy.

TAAG Angola Airlines announced plans to launch a new route connecting Luanda, Angola, and Nairobi, Kenya, with three flights per week. The service is designed to strengthen links between the two countries and leverage Jomo Kenyatta International Airport’s position as one of East Africa’s main hubs. With strong connections to Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, the airport could help TAAG tap into larger transit flows, especially toward Asian and European markets tied to Angola’s trade.

The new route is part of TAAG’s broader network expansion plan, which aims to triple annual passenger traffic to 3 million by 2030, compared to about 1 million in 2022. To achieve this target, the airline plans to increase its fleet from about 20 aircraft to 50 in the coming years.

A central pillar of the government’s aviation strategy, TAAG returned to profitability in 2022 after a state-led turnaround program. Now financially stable, the airline is expected to play a key role in supporting operations at the new Luanda international airport, which has a capacity of 15 million passengers and 130,000 tons of cargo per year.

These moves align with Angola’s broader policy to develop aviation, tourism, trade, and services as drivers of economic diversification at a time when the country is accelerating efforts to reduce reliance on oil exports.
