Tunisia Sets 2026 Deadline for Full Digital Shift in Public Hospitals

  • Telemedicine, data systems, and digital platforms are already expanding
  • Success will depend on system integration and staff adoption

Tunisia is moving to fully digitize its public hospital system by the end of 2026, stepping up efforts to modernize healthcare delivery through technology.

The Health Ministry confirmed the plan on March 20 in a written response to a parliamentary question, outlining the continuation of its “integrated digitalization strategy.”

The initiative is part of a broader push to upgrade public services by using digital tools to improve care quality.

The rollout is based on the gradual deployment of digital solutions across healthcare facilities. Several regional hospitals are already equipped with telemedicine and remote imaging systems, allowing for virtual consultations and faster diagnoses.

At the same time, authorities are developing specialized digital platforms, including tools for medical assistance and emergency management. A unified health information system, known as “One Health,” is also under development to connect health data and improve coordination across the sector.

Tunisia has been advancing healthcare digitalization for several years. In 2020, it secured a €27.3 million loan (about $31.3 million) to support the effort. Since then, the country has launched multiple initiatives, including its first fully digital hospital in 2025 and the selection of Tunisie Telecom to lead key projects.

Through this transformation, the government aims to improve efficiency, reduce treatment delays, and expand access to care, particularly in underserved areas.

Digitalization is also expected to help optimize the management of hospital resources, including staff and equipment, while strengthening data-driven decision-making in public policy.

However, the success of the transition will depend on ensuring system interoperability and supporting healthcare workers as they adopt new technologies.
