Last year, the United States became Kenya’s biggest export destination beyond the continent’s borders, the Central Bank of Kenya reports.
Over the period reviewed, Kenyan exports to the US grew by 9.53% YoY to KSh51.9 billion (about $512 million), the highest peak in 5 years. The exports mainly consisted of textiles and clothing. While Pakistan was the East African nation’s top buyer outside Africa, shipment to this market dropped by 23.86% in 2019 giving the place to the US.
Let’s note that the United States and Kenya have recently announced their intention to negotiate a historic bilateral free trade agreement which should replace the current Africa Growth and Opportunity Act (Agoa).
Uganda is the leading destination for Kenyan exports in Africa and the world with KSh63.65 billion ($628 million).
