The Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) has received the financial support of the African Development Bank (AfDB) to fund the preparatory activities of the Transmaghreb rail project linking Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia. This was announced by the union in a release published on February 4, 2019.

Late January, the union launched “an international call for application to recruit an individual consultant (or a firm’s representative) for the marketing of the Transmaghreb railroad renovation and modernization study”.

Applications should be submitted at the AMU’s registry office located at 73, Tansift road, Agdal, Rabat, by February 15, 2019.

The project is aimed at renovating and modernising the 363 kilometer long railway linking Morocco and Algeria as well as the 503 kilometers long railway between Algeria and Tunisia. 

Part of the AfDB’s donation whose volume has not been disclosed will be used to organize an investors’ panel meeting on March 28, 2019.

The Transmaghreb railway will be 2,350 kilometers long. The cost of this project initiated in the 90’s and aimed at promoting trade exchanges between the three Maghreb central countries and ensuring free movement of goods and services is estimated to be $3.8 billion.
