On July 5, 2017, the ANC ended a conference at Nasrec, south of Johannesburg, to discuss the issue of land expropriation without compensation which divides them and create tensions in their mist. More than 3,700 delegates were gathered at the conference.
Delegates of the land reform commission, which has been established to reflect on amendment to article 25 of the constitution to facilitate expropriation without compensation, indeed hardly convinced ANC members. Concerned over the project, the secretary general of the party, Gwede Mantashe said: “The push for the expropriation of land without compensation is such a radical policy shift that it is likely to plunge the country into deeper crisis”.
A concern which is shared by Deputy Mathole Motshekga, former member of the land reform commission, which says the proposal is “irrational and reckless”, News 24 reported. His opinion in fact is what cost him his place in the commission.
