Malawi’s economy should grow by 7% in 2019, the country’s finance minister, Goodall Gondwe (photo) estimated on January 3, 2019, pointing out the stability of macro-economic fundamentals.
“We started the stabilization of the economy well. This means that the debt is no more accumulating as it was the case in 2014 and in 2015 and, it also means that our economy can now start to grow. I think that soon, we will reach a 7% or 8% growth”, he said to a local media.
M. Gondwe’s growth forecasts are really optimistic compared to those made by the World Bank.
In a report published in November 2018, while indicating that Malawi’ economy was still vulnerable to weather conditions, World Bank estimated that the country’s GDP should grow by about 4 to 5% in the coming two years.
