South Sudan's President establishes new 550-member transitional legislative national assembly

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir (pictured) appointed members of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) on Monday, May 10, 2021. Composed of 550 members, the new parliament is included in the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement signed in 2018.

The transitional government has the parliamentary majority with 332 members. It is followed by Riek Machar's Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM-IO) with 128 members, then the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) with 50 members. Other political parties will be represented by 30 members and former detainees by 10 members.

As a reminder, the peace agreement first signed in 2015 and then revitalized in September 2018 aims to end the civil war that began in 2013. Its implementation started on Saturday, May 8, 2021, with the announcement by the president of the dissolution of the former parliament and the overhaul of the country's management system in the hope of maintaining peace.

The 2018 agreement also provides for the establishment of the Council of States, which should have 100 members instead of the 50 initially planned.
