In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Eastern Kasaï which is located in the central part of the country is the most affected by land-related conflicts. This was revealed in a report of the ad-hoc commission established by the customary district of Bakwa Kashile.
“The Bakwa Kashile district, in the Bakwa Kalonji chieftaincy, also located in Tshilenge territory, Eastern Kasaï, appears as the customary district most affected by conflicts related to arable lands, with at least 73 cases recorded in 2016. Victims of expropriation declared to the members of the commission that their lands are sold for $200-$400, according to the area, by indegenous populations with the help of the district’s chief,” said l’Agence congolaise de Presse.
Commenting on the accusations, the head of the Bakwa Kalonji chieftaincy said there was no abuse of power and promised to do everything to end the situation which affects owners and local farmers.
