(Ecofin Agency) - José Salgueiro, the head of studies, planning and statistics office at the Ministry of energy and water revealed that between 2013 and 2017, Angola’s water and energy sector received $13 billion as investments.
The official said that the fund was mainly used to expand the country’s energy production and transport capacity. The largest share (80%) went to the energy sub-sector through the national program to interconnect the North, Center and South counties to the national grid.
Moreover, the country has also built a 750 MW combined cycle power plant in Soyo (Northern side), at a cost significantly reduced owing to the use of local gas. “Here in Angola, the average cost per kilowatt-hour is 2.5 dollar cents while in other countries within the region, this price is 8 cents,” José Salgueiro said. Let’s note that Angola, whose electrification rate is around 50% wants to achieve universal access to energy by 2030.
