Tunisia could lose about $138 per year due to the natural disasters the country is confronted with, Riadh Mouakher, Tunisia’s minister of local and environmental affairs indicated last week.
According to the official, this loss would be due to the damages sustained by infrastructures during floods and fires as well as the drop in productivity in the agriculture sector induced by drought.
"In Tunisia, floods are responsible for more than 60% of the economic losses, infrastructures damages and many deaths [...] these floods are followed by droughts", the official indicated according to statements reported by Xinhua.
While 36,000 jobs should be lost in the country by 2050 because of climate change, the minister announced the adoption of a national strategy to reduce the risk of natural disasters.
Let’s note that during the past thirty years, the country’s losses to natural disasters was more than $350 million according to figures reported by Webmanagercenter.
