Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera reported yesterday April 18 that the Labor Minister and 14 other public servants found themselves guilty of misusing the financial resources earmarked to fight the Covid-19 pandemic in the country. The Minister got fired and his accomplices got arrested.
Chakwera said the audit that was carried out on the use of about $8 million intended to fight the pandemic showed that part of the fund disappeared mysteriously. The investigation revealed that Ken Kandodo, the Labor Minister, used about $780 for a personal trip to South Africa.
The dismissal reflects the president’s strong commitment to fighting corruption in Malawi. "There are no sacred cows. If the finger of evidence points to you... you are going to prison," Lazarus Chakwera said.
