(Ecofin Agency) - The government of Mozambique expects ports to handle more than 50 million tons of goods by the end of 2019, above what was initially envisaged. According to the transport minister, Carlos Mesquita, who reported the information, the higher volume outlook is linked to programs thought by the State to upgrade port transport facilities and equipment.
These include the acquisition of buses and locomotives for freight and passenger transport; the completion of the Cuamba-Lichinga railway, the multi-purpose port and the Nacala railway line; the improvement of the capacity of the Ressano Garcia railway line; and the acquisition of maritime surveillance equipment.
The implementation of a legal and operational reform to relaunch cabotage transport (short distance freight and passenger transport, ed) has also boosted the country's port performance.
“The ongoing legal reform must continue and there is an urgent need to approve the port law being drafted,” Mr. Mesquita pointed out.
