(Ecofin Agency) - Zimbabwe will disburse a $64 million urgency plan to manage the new cholera outbreak, July Moyo, the Local Government Minister says.
According to the official’s statement reported by The Herald, this budget is based on the estimates that reveal that 50,000 (less than 100,000 in the worst case) residents could be affected. To promptly address this outbreak, the authorities appealed for funds being them cash or in-kind donations.
Let’s note that the first case of this outbreak was reported on September 6, 2018, and to date, 31 of the affected have died.
Just days after this plague was reported in Algeria, this new outbreak that prompted Zimbabwe to issue health emergency in Harare shows that African countries need to urgently elaborate a coordinated strategy to eradicate the plague, which has already been eliminated in many regions in the world.
Let’s remind that in August 2018, during the 68th session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa, African governments committed to implementing measures to eradicate cholera from the continent by 2030.
