Emirati port operator, Dubai Port World (DP World) will inject $30 million in the construction of a second port in Bargny (about 30km south of Dakar), and purchase of new equipment for the Dakar autonomous port.
This was revealed by the Presidency, in a statement released after a meeting between Senegal’s president, Macky Sall, and DP World’s CEO, Ahmed Bin Sulayem (picture), yesterday, September 25, 2017.
It should be recalled that DP World which plans to increase its investments in Senegal, is the concessionaire of a container terminal in the northern zone of the Dakar port (related agreement was signed on Oct. 7, 2017, and will be valid for 25 years). The Emirati group established at the site new installations in November 2011, doubling its capacity to more than 600,000 TEU per year.
Regarding the project for the second port of Bargny which is called “port du futur” or the port of the future, it became necessary as Dakar’s port has reached its expansion capacity. Designing, funding, construction and management of the new container terminal of the upcoming port, which could receive up to 1.5 million containers per year, were trusted to DP World.
