Morocco to invest $3 billion in its road infrastructures in 2018-2021

Wednesday, 26 September 2018 18:31

From 2018 to 2021, Morocco will invest MAD7 billion every year in road infrastructures (amounting to MAD28 billion or $3 billion within that period), Abdelkader Amara (photo), the transport minister said on September 24 at the launch of the tenth national road congress in Al Hoceima, in the northern region.

For years now, the country’s investments in the road infrastructures rose significantly. Indeed, the official reminded that in 2008-2011, MAD5 billion (about $535 million) was invested every year and in 2012-2017, these investments increased to MAD6.5 billion (about $695 million) representing about 0.8% of the country’s GDP.

Abdelkader Amara also explained that in Morocco, the classified road network is estimated at more than 57,300 kilometers including 43,300 km of paved roads, 1,200 km of expressways and 1,800 km of motorways already in service. As far as road structures are concerned, they are estimated at 9,900 units.

The Moroccan road network ensures 90% of residents’ mobility and 75% of the transportation of goods and products excluding phosphate. Thanks to that, the transport sector makes about 6% of Morocco’s GDP and provide jobs to 10% of the urban workforce.
