Ghana and the UK signed a £20 million trade and economic agreement on August 28, 2018.
Tailored to the Ghanaian president Nana Akufo-Addo’s vision of a “Ghana Beyond Aid”, the aim of this agreement is to mainly create jobs and promote the country’s economic transformation programme.
According to the British minister of state for Africa Harriet Baldwin (At the left on the picture), who signed the agreement on behalf of her government, the deal will focus on four key points.
It will support the reforms to improve Ghana’s business environment and the promotion of foreign investments. In addition, it will help diversify export-oriented value-added activities and develop the infrastructures to attract investors.
For Harriet Baldwin, the implementation of such programme will attract at least £15 million additional funding and help create about 15,000 jobs in Ghana.
Speaking on behalf of Ghana, the Ghanaian trade and industry minister Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen explained that his country has embarked on an industrial transformation programme based on ten different segments and this agreement will, therefore, help Ghana develop the main segments of this transformation programme.
