Algeria: Iman Houda Feraoun invites private companies to invest more in ICT

Thursday, 24 September 2015 21:03

Invited to the forum organised by the daily Liberté on 21 September 2015, Iman Houda Feraoun (photo), Minister of Post and Information Technologies and Communications invited private investors to get involved in the development of the national ICT market. Her invitation results from the assessment she made from the inability of Algérie Telecom, the national telecommunications operator, to supply quality internet access throughout the whole country.

For the minister of Post and ICT, Algérie Telecom has turned into a "behemoth difficult to manage" unable to provide coverage for a country as vast as Algeria without support. Because the concept of public service of Algérie Telecom has always been showcased without really measuring the capacity of the company to fulfil its missions, many regions, specifically those of South and Hauts Plateaux remain deprive of internet access. The arrival of private investors in this sector would help reducing the pressure on the national operator and solve problems it faces in supplying internet to remote areas.

In the currently very difficult economic environment, Iman Houda Feraoun sees ICT as one of the sectors which could revive growth and allow the state to receive important revenues. Indeed, the demand in quality and high speed internet services has grown considerably. In a country where many regions are still lacking in internet services, private investors are faced with a market full of possibilities which could positively contribute to the national GDP.
