Maroc Telecom, Méditel and Inwi block calls from Viber, WhatsApp and Skype

Wednesday, 06 January 2016 19:17

Maroc Télécom, Méditel and inwi from Morocco blocked all VoIP calls on their networks. Media24.com citing an internal sourcee of these operators said the blocking was backed by legal facts. However, though the VoIP calls cannot be made using 3G and 4G, it is still possible to make them using the Wi-fi. The website adds that even these should be completely blocked by the next two months. Asides VoIP calls, other services such as instant messaging, voice-notes, sharing of pictures and videos remain functional.

It has been months now that the telecom operators have been complaining about VoIP calls saying they significantly cut in their profits as they help subscribers save a lot on communication.

Truly, Xalam Analutics, Heavy Reading’s research division for Africa and Middle East, in a study revealed that VoIP applications helped the African mobile user save from 40% to 99% on the traditional call fee.

All over Africa, many operators such as Maroc Télécom, Méditel and Inwi already tried to fully block, repeatedly, Viber, Skype and Whatsapp which they blame of cutting in their revenues without investing a penny in infrastructure or network expansion.
