China Telecom Group to support Djibouti Telecom in development projects

On December 4, 2015, during the sixth edition of Forum on China-Africa Cooperation which lasted till December 5, 2015, in Johannesburg, South Africa, Chinese firm China Telecom Group signed with Djibouti Telecom, a cooperation agreement. The agreement was signed by Djiboutian minister for Communication, Posts and Telecommunication, Ali Hassan Bahon.

Under this agreement which is the outcome of negotiations started two months ago in Hungary between both parties, China Telecom Group is to collaborate and provide financial support to Djibouti Telecom for various projects. The telecom company who is working towards modernizing its infrastructure and improving the quality of its services, already initiated a number of projects of which the financing since August 2015 of two new submarine fiber optic cables: Asia-Africa-Europé-1 (AAE-1) and South-East Asia-Middle-East Western Europe 5 (SMW-5). This infrastructure will strengthen Djibouti’s position as entry point for internet in Ethiopia.

Additionally, Djibouti Telecom also currently works on a project named “Dare”, for the implementation of a regional submarine fiber optic cable. All these projects aim to provide populations a high-speed broadband access, innovative telecom services, and make Djibouti a regional hub in terms of ICTs. .

The expertise of China Telecom Group should allow Djibouti Telecom to better satisfy its consumers whose needs in data and innovative services cease not to grow.
