Millicom takes 24% share in capital of Helios Towers Africa

Friday, 09 October 2015 10:35

The Luxemburg telecom group Millicom International Cellular, operating in several African markets under the mark of Tigo, has acquired a 24% interest in the capital of the telecom infrastructure management company Helios Towers Africa. The two companies announced that this acquisition of shares by Millicom in Helios Towers Africa follows a reorganisation in capital.

In effect, Millicom exchanged its shares held in the subsidiaries of HTA of Ghana, DRC and Tanzania, into shares in the parent company. These shares were acquired by Millicom in 2010, when the telecom infrastructure manager took possession of 2450 telecom towers in Ghana, DRC and Tanzania. Helios Towers Africa explained that by this operation of exchange of shares, the company wished to simplify the structure of its shareholding and protect the interests of its shareholders.

In entering the capital of the HTA group, Millicom guarantees itself new sources of revenue. The telecom infrastructure manager has recently raised $363 million to finance new acquisitions and foster growth in the markets where it is present.
