Tanzania: Regulator reveals auction for new frequencies to improve mobile broadband

Friday, 12 February 2016 17:26

With its seven telecom operators namely Vodacom, Tigo, Airtel, TTCL, Smart, Benson, and Halotel trying to boost their presence in the telecom market and who wish to provide Tanzanians with high speed services, the need for new frequencies is most pressing.

Well aware, Tanzania’s telecom regulatory authority TCRA announced the upcoming auction for new telecom frequencies, Daily News reports.

These frequencies were acquired at the World Radio Communication conference held in Geneva, Switzerland, in November 2015. These frequencies are in the 694-790 MHz, 1427-1492 MHz and 3300-3600 MHz bands. The new telecom bands will help boost large-band telecom services across the country. This was announced by Ally Simba, director general TCRA, during national frequency stakeholder meeting this week in Dar Es Salaam.

Ally Simab added that the auctioning of frequencies would be better than the current system. This one was based on an apply-and-get system. The new system is more transparent, increase revenues of public treasury and the regulator will make sure that awarded frequencies are used for the intended goals.
