Togo: Government allows Moov to exploit 3G

Friday, 15 January 2016 18:04

(Ecofin Agency) - During the council of ministers held on January 13, 2016, the government of Togo adopted a decree mandating its minister of digital economy, Cina Lawson, to authorize to the mobile operator Moov to exploit 3G. According to Republic Of Togo, Moov has been enabled to commercialize the technology until 2021. Until now, the technology was exclusive to Togo Cellulaire.

In its decree, the State stated that Moov would commit “to investing a lot into the infrastructure, the expansion of network coverage, the densification of already covered areas, job creation, and allowing Togolese to participate to training”. By allowing Moov to enter the 3G market, the government wishes to establish a fairer mobile market as it grants operators the same advantages and to consumers, the ability to choose the service they like most.

There are only two mobile operators active in Togo. These are Togo Cellulaire, subsidiary of Telecom Togo, and Moov, subsidiary of Maroc Telecom.

However, this could soon change. Indeed, back in June 2014, the minister of digital economy said a third operator was to be awarded a licence to operate.
