In Senegal, the deadline set by the telecom and posts regulatory authority (ARTP) for telecom operators to identify and verify identity of their users passed last Nov. 11.
After the operation, the regulator found out that they are four million unidentified SIM card users for a total of 15 million subscribers. However, instead of cutting off the unregistered as it threatened earlier, ARTP gave them an additional week to register.
Talking on November 10 during a visit in Touba, ahead of the Magal which starts on November 18, Abdou Karim Sall, ARTP’s Managing Director however announced that “starting next week, all non-registered users will be suspended”. He added that suspension will begin on Nov. 19, 2016. Non-registered users will after this be unable to make or receive calls. Suspension will be lifted only after the concerned user registers.
The regulatory organ will from now on monitor the consumers of Orange, Tigo and Expresso, continuously.
