Saturday, 17 October 2015 16:44

On 13 October 2015, the sub-marine fibre optic cable Africa Coast to Europe (ACE), was officially commissioned during a ceremony organised by the ministry of Communication and Information and Communication Technologies. The commissioning involved starting up the connecting equipment housed in the landing station located at Rue du Centre Psychiatrique Jacquot, in the Fidjorossè area of Cotonou. The president of the Republic of Benin, Thomas Boni Yayi took part in the ceremony.

The commissioning of the ACE cable will enable Benin to benefit from an improvement in the quality of telecom services and ICT, to better secure telecommunications and ICT infrastructure, to develop the sector.

The connection of the country to the ACE cable took place on 1st April 2015, through the arrival on the Benin coasts of the fibre optic infrastructure deployed by equipment manufacturer Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN). The USD 35 million project was financed by the International Development Agency (IDA) of the World Bank, the State of Benin and the Economic grouping “Benin ACE” comprised of operators Bénin Télécoms, MTN, Etisalat and Libercom; internet access providers Internet OTI, EIT, UNIVERCELL and ISOCEL. It was undertaken as part of the West African Regional Communication Infrastructure Programme (WARCIP).

The ACE cable is the second fibre optic infrastructure in Benin. It will strengthen the redundancy and international bandwidth capacity of the SAT3 sub-marine cable, which was commissioned in 2002.
