Nokia says 5G could come faster than expected

Thursday, 25 February 2016 18:19

5G could come online faster than expected. This was revealed by Nokia’s Chief Executive Rajeev Suri at the Mobile World Congress which is ending today in Barcelona, Spain.

According to Rajeev Suri, cited by zdnet.fr, things are happening faster than expected in terms of standardization. Various public-private partnerships are being signed to improve technological research, telecom manufacturers are developing more and more products to favor high-speed data transfer. “In contrast to past big bang rollouts of older mobile equipment cycles, 5G will require plenty of equipment upgrades to occur before some of the key 5G standards are expected to be formalized in 2018 and 2019 (…) 2020 is probably where we will see global volume deployments but we will start to see a lot of action ahead of 2020- in 2017, 2018, 2019,” Rajeev Suri said.

Not to be left behind in this race towards super high-speed, Nokia plans to increase investments in 5G, this year. The goal here is to offer, if possible, by the start of 2017, equipment to allow operators to switch to the new technology.
