Nigeria: Talks with MTN over $3.9bn fine halted as parliamentary investigation continues

Monday, 25 April 2016 16:17

According to thisdaylive.com citing Minister of communication, Adebayo Shittu, the Federal Government of Nigeria will suspend all negotiations with MTN over reduction of $3.9 billion fine. The government has decided to wait for the outcome of the investigation on MTN carried out by Chamber of representatives.

On March 23, 2016, the representatives demanded that parliamentary commission in charge of telecommunication undertakes an investigation to find out if MTN’s infringement – non-deactivation of 5.1 million unidentified SIM cards – contributed in any way to the death of 10,000 Nigerians in Boko Haram attacks. The deputies said they wished to know if MTN could be sued on that basis as well.

Meeting with journalists on April 20, 2016, Adebayo Shittu said negotiations with MTN would re-open upon the completion of the investigation. However, apprehensions linger as to what will occur in case these investigations demonstrate that MTN’s action truly had an impact on national security.
