Mobile operator Orange announced through a release published on December 23, 2015, it will launch 4G in Guinea Bissau. The company acquired a global operation licence for 3G and 4G at a cost of FCFA2 billion, in order to distribute the technology. Initially, the 4G technology will cover the capital city before extending to other cities and communities.
Orange Guinea Bissau, Sonatel’s subsidiary with headquarters in Senegal, will provide high speed internet to Guineans. The 4G will also help develop the country’s ICT industry through new uses, and by generating more jobs and revenues.
Orange Guinea Bissau which contributes to 3% of tax revenues is Sonatel’s first subsidiary to introduce 4G on the market. Its Senegalese subsidiary should be next.
Indeed, Senegal has recently launched a call to tenders for acquisition and operation of 4G licence. The various proposals are to be submitted latest by January 18, 2016, Senegal’s telecom regulator ARPT said.
