Since 23 October 2015, mobile operator Méditel has launched its ADSL offer on the Moroccan market. Though the unbundling requested from Maroc Telecom for a year and a half now is not yet complete, the telecom company, subsidiary of French telecom group Orange, has decided to go into the market with the little already available. The offer is composite, i.e. consisting of a fixed telephone line and internet access.
The subscription which has a validity of one year entitles the customer to an internet connection of up to 12 Mbps, unlimited calls to national landline telephone numbers and 2 hours of voice to national mobile numbers. The calls are charged per second. The fear of having to change telephone numbers when registering for a new subscription being one of the main reasons for consumers to refuse to try new services, the telecom operator provides the possibility of keeping their previous number. Another advantage that the telecom company wants to put forward is the fast service. The company is committed to activate the subscription within ten days.
Despite the attractive features of the Méditel fixed Internet offer, consumers who were expecting a drop in prices with the end of the monopoly of Maroc Telecom on this segment appear disappointed. Méditel is indeed more expensive than the historical operator. Its offer is set at 240 Dirhams (USD 24.4) per month, against 199 Dirhams (USD 20.2) for Maroc Telecom, for the same connection speed. Prior to the subscription, there is also the need to buy a router sold at 490 Dirhams (USD 49.9), the telephone at 149 Dirhams (USD 15.1) and pay for the technical assistance which Méditel offers at 240 Dirhams (USD 24.4). Thus a total of 1078 Dirhams (USD 109.9).
