Algeria and Tunisia will strengthen their interconnection capacity through optic fibre

The Tunisian minister of Communication Technology and Digital Economy, Noomène El Fehri and Houda Imane Feraoun (photo), Algerian minister of Posts and ICT, met on 26 October 2015.

During the audience hosted by his Algerian counterpart, both ministers agreed on strengthening the optic fibre which links the two countries since 2013 in Taref, border wilaya between the two countries.

According to the explanations of the Algerian Minister of Posts and ICT, strengthening the capacities of this bi-national internet backbone rolled out by Tunisie Telecom and Algérie Telecom “will enable a direct connection without passing by other transit points”. This should guarantee the continuity of the international internet traffic should there be a breakdown on the sub-marine optic fibre cables to which Algeria is connected, as was the case with the Sea-Me-We 4 where repairs works have been completed.

Beyond internet, Ministers Noomène El Fehri and Houda Imane Feraoun also agreed on consistency in the call tariffs from one destination to the other. In other terms, the roaming tariffs between the two countries will be harmonised to facilitate communications of their citizens established in those countries.
