On December 28, 2015, during the signing of agreement for digitalization of inter-ministerial mails, Noomane Fehri, Minister of technologies, communication and digital economy, announced that the 4G licence would be awarded for 155 million dinars (nearly $77 million). Process for selection of technical proposal from those submitted by Tunisise Telecom, Ooredoo and Orange should occur in February 2016.
These licences should be finally awarded in March 2016. Noomane Fehri said 4G should effectively come online in June 2016. The technology should cover 20% of national territory at launch and extend to far communities often forgotten by telecom operators.
Once 4G is operational, operators can introduce new services on the market, so as to win new shares. Government who is to cash in 465 million dinars (about $230 million) upon completion of the transaction believes it to be a long-term investment. Truly, the landing of 4G should accelerate development of ICT in Tunisia thus boosting its share in the economy.
