China launches AI contest targeting African innovators and students
Initiative aims to identify high-impact solutions across key sectors
Program includes exposure, partnerships, and training opportunities in China
China has announced the launch of an international competition focused on artificial intelligence, aimed at highlighting African talent and innovation. The initiative, unveiled on April 24, is part of celebrations marking 70 years of diplomatic ties between China and several African countries.
Led by the Secretariat of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), the program reflects Beijing’s effort to engage more deeply with Africa’s growing innovation ecosystems, at a time when AI is emerging as a key driver of economic transformation and global competitiveness.
The competition seeks projects that can address major development challenges across sectors such as healthcare, education, industry, scientific research, and public services. Organizers are prioritizing solutions with strong impact potential and the ability to scale within broader digital transformation efforts.
Beyond the competition itself, the initiative is designed to give African innovators international exposure. Selected projects will be featured in a global publication and connected to collaboration opportunities with players in China’s technology sector.
Winners will also take part in an immersion program in China, aimed at strengthening exchanges with AI experts and encouraging knowledge transfer and partnerships in a rapidly evolving field.
The contest is open to students, researchers, entrepreneurs, and digital professionals from across Africa. No formal organizational structure is required, with evaluation based on the relevance, originality, and potential impact of the proposed ideas.
Applications are open until May 29, 2026, through the official submission platform https://ecnxdbgxnkac.feishu.cn/share/base/form/shrcnOZjhi7LTFB6eLAFb6ej5Ve
