Morocco More Than Doubles Renewable Capacity in a Decade, Driven by Wind
Tuesday, 07 April 2026 18:07
  • Morocco renewable capacity doubles to 4,851 MW by 2025
  • Wind leads growth; solar expands, hydropower remains stable
  • High energy import dependence persists despite transition efforts

Morocco more than doubled its renewable energy capacity over the past decade, rising from 2,417 MW in 2016 to 4,851 MW by the end of 2025. The increase, confirmed by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in March 2026, reflects an accelerating energy transition despite continued reliance on imports.

Wind power drove the expansion, reaching 2,452 MW, up from 902 MW ten years earlier. Solar capacity also increased, from 202 MW to 1,086 MW, but still lags behind wind. Hydropower remained stable at 1,306 MW over the period.

At the continental level, this momentum gives Morocco a significant role. Africa’s total renewable capacity reached 82,371 MW in 2025, or 1.6% of the global total. Morocco accounts for nearly 5.9% of that capacity. The continent added 11.3 GW during the year, marking growth of 15.9%.

The pace of Morocco’s transition underscores a key challenge for energy sovereignty. The country still imports a large share of its fossil fuel needs, with energy dependency at 87.5% in 2024, according to Energy Transition Minister Leila Benali.

Morocco remains exposed to vulnerabilities that could hinder its industrial sovereignty, notably its dependence on fossil fuel imports, which account for a large share of primary energy consumption,” she said in an interview with local media.

Expanding solar and wind capacity could help reduce the country’s energy bill and limit exposure to international price shocks.
