  • Rockefeller, GEAPP commit over $100 million to Mission 300 initiative
  • Funds support electrification planning, coordination, and investment mobilization
  • Project has connected 44 million people since April 2024

The Rockefeller Foundation and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) have committed more than $100 million to the Mission 300 project.

The new funding was announced during the Powering Africa Summit held on March 19-20 in Washington. It marks a sharp increase from the initial $10 million raised in September 2024.

The funds will not directly finance large-scale infrastructure. Instead, they aim to accelerate electrification projects. They will support technical assistance to governments, strengthen coordination and monitoring capacity, advance project development, and help mobilize public and private investment.

Some initiatives focus on decentralized solutions, including off-grid solar, income-generating uses of electricity, and clean cooking. The statement did not detail how the funding will be distributed by country or which projects will benefit.

Catalytic capital from partners such as The Rockefeller Foundation and the Global Energy Alliance plays a critical role in strengthening government delivery capacity, de-risking investments, and accelerating projects that can mobilize much larger flows of public and private finance," said Kevin Kariuki, vice president for power, energy, climate, and green growth at the African Development Bank.

According to the statement, about 44 million people have been connected to electricity since the launch of Mission 300 in April 2024. The project’s tracking portal shows that 39 million people have been connected since July 2023 through World Bank financing.

With more than 730 million people worldwide still lacking access to electricity, the emphasis on project development and capacity building appears to be a key driver. It is intended to speed up investment needed to meet 2030 targets.
