  • Airline converts option for six Boeing 787-9 into firm order

  • Aircraft to support intercontinental routes and growing cargo demand

  • Part of broader plan to expand fleet and global network by 2040

Ethiopian Airlines has confirmed a firm order for six Boeing 787-9 aircraft, converting an option initially placed in 2023. The airline plans to deploy these Dreamliners to strengthen its long-haul network from Addis Ababa while expanding cargo capacity to meet rising demand on intercontinental routes.

The carrier currently operates a fleet of ten B787-9s and twenty B787-8s. This widebody family, which can carry between 250 and 320 passengers depending on configuration, is a central component of Ethiopian Airlines’ broader fleet of 170 aircraft.

The new order aligns with the airline’s updated “Vision 2040” strategy, unveiled this month as it marked its 80th anniversary.

Under the plan, Ethiopian Airlines aims to grow its fleet to 350 aircraft and expand its network to 243 global destinations, up from 145 today.

The group also expects strong growth in traffic. Passenger numbers are projected to reach 63.9 million, compared with 19 million in the last fiscal year. Cargo volumes are also set to increase significantly, with a target of 1.9 million metric tons, up from 754,000 tons currently.

However, achieving these goals will not be without challenges. The global aircraft shortage, climate-related disruptions, ongoing conflicts in various regions, and broader economic uncertainty remain key operational risks for airlines worldwide.
