  • Initiative part of broader government digital transformation efforts

Mauritania is considering digitizing its national examinations and competitive entrance exams. The project, jointly led by the ministries of Education and Digital Transformation, aims to strengthen transparency and reliability in a process that has frequently drawn criticism for organizational shortcomings.

Officials meeting on Thursday, April 2, worked on integrating digital tools at multiple stages of the examination cycle, from drafting test papers to grading them. The goal is to reduce human error, improve traceability and ensure greater fairness for candidates.

Following discussions among the ministries involved, a roadmap was established, outlining phases of technical testing and a gradual rollout of digital tools before any large-scale adoption. This phased approach is intended to assess system reliability and adjust deployment based on real-world conditions.

Mauritania is advancing its digital transformation across several sectors, from healthcare to public administration. The education sector is part of this broader push, with a focus on the transparency of examination results — a key factor in building trust among students, families and institutions.

In September 2025, authorities launched “Tesjil,” a digital platform that fully digitizes the enrollment process at the University of Nouakchott. For 2026, the government has allocated $24.2 million to support digital projects across the country.
