Botswana Seals Solar, Oil, and Mining Deals with Oman

Botswana Seals Solar, Oil, and Mining Deals with Oman

  • Botswana and Oman signed three agreements covering mining, oil infrastructure, and solar energy.

  • The deals include a 500 MW solar plant with battery storage to strengthen energy supply.

  • The agreements mark a deepening of bilateral ties established in October 2025.

Botswana and Oman strengthened bilateral ties by signing three agreements on Monday, April 13, during the official visit of President Duma Gideon Boko to the Sultanate.

The agreements cover strategic sectors including solar energy, mining, and oil. The first agreement links the Botswana Geoscience Institute with Minerals Development Oman. The partners will conduct joint exploration to develop Botswana’s mineral resources, including copper, gold, graphite, and iron ore.

The second agreement involves OQ S.A.O.C. and Botswana Oil Limited. The partners will jointly develop strategic petroleum infrastructure, including coastal storage facilities in Walvis Bay and the Tshele Hills petroleum depot.

The two countries also signed a third agreement to develop a 500 MW solar photovoltaic plant integrated with battery storage. The project represents a major investment that will strengthen Botswana’s electricity supply and accelerate its transition to a low-carbon economy.

“These projects will strengthen fuel supply chains, improve national resilience, and consolidate Botswana’s long-term energy security,” President Duma Gideon Boko said.

This visit extends diplomatic engagement initiated by Muscat in 2025. That process led Botswana and Oman to establish formal diplomatic relations in October of that year. Since then, both countries have intensified cooperation, including a visit by an Omani business delegation to Botswana.

Meanwhile, Oman continues to pursue a strategy of diversifying its partnerships across Africa. In April 2025, the Sultanate signed several agreements with Morocco. It then followed with a memorandum of understanding with Algeriain May to establish a joint investment fund.
