Activist Kemi Seba arrested in Pretoria with two others
Suspected illegal border crossing attempt costing 250,000 rand
Faces extradition to Benin over state security charges
Beninese-born activist Kemi Seba, born Stellio Gilles Robert Capo Chichi, was arrested on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, in Pretoria, according to a National Police press release. The operation was carried out by specialized law enforcement units focused on crimes against the state.
He was arrested in a shopping mall along with his son, Khonsou Seba Capo Chichi, and a suspected accomplice. He is suspected of involvement in an attempt to illegally cross the Limpopo River into Zimbabwe. According to preliminary findings, the crossing was reportedly arranged for about 250,000 rand ($15,250).
The three suspects appeared briefly before the Brooklyn Magistrate’s Court later that day, before the case was postponed to April 20. They were remanded in custody. Authorities also seized mobile phones and nearly 318,000 rand in cash.
Meanwhile, South African authorities, with support from Interpol, confirmed that Kemi Seba is the subject of an international arrest warrant issued by Benin in December 2025. He is being prosecuted there for advocating crimes against state security and inciting rebellion. Extradition proceedings are now underway.
Kemi Seba is known for his criticism of Western influence in Africa and his opposition to the CFA franc.
