  • Agreements cover multiple economic sectors
  • Visa-free travel agreed for diplomatic and service passport holders
  • Partnership aims to boost trade, security, and regional cooperation

Chad and Algeria have signed several agreements and memorandums of understanding across multiple sectors, Chad’s Ministry of Communication said on Wednesday, April 22.

The agreements cover sectors including communication, public works, youth, animal health, pharmaceuticals, industry and trade.

The two countries also signed a visa exemption agreement for holders of diplomatic and service passports, as well as a deal on political and diplomatic consultations, the ministry said.

The agreements followed a state visit by Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno to Algiers at the invitation of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

After holding private talks, the two leaders chaired the fourth session of the Algerian-Chadian Joint Commission for Cooperation, where they discussed economic partnership, investment and trade.

The talks resulted in measures aimed at strengthening economic and diplomatic ties and supporting joint initiatives, Chad’s foreign ministry said.

The partnership comes as Algeria seeks to deepen ties with Sahel countries facing security challenges and growing geopolitical competition. This includes the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline project, which aims to transport Nigerian gas to Europe via Niger and Algeria.

In February and March, Algeria also signed agreements with Burkina Faso and Niger. For Chad, the partnership aims to strengthen security and support economic development through Algerian investment.
