  • Nigeria’s foreign minister Tuggar resigns, cites service to Tinubu
  • Resignation linked to directive for 2027 election aspirants
  • Tuggar, former Germany envoy, may run for Bauchi governor

Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar resigned on Monday, thanking President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the opportunity to serve and contribute to the implementation of the “4D” diplomatic strategy, Nigeria’s foreign policy framework.

Local media reported that the move follows a directive from President Tinubu requiring members of his administration intending to contest the 2027 elections to step down by March 31.

Sources said Tuggar is considering a run for governor of Bauchi State under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

An experienced diplomat and politician, Tuggar was appointed foreign minister in August 2023. He previously served as Nigeria’s ambassador to Germany from 2017 to 2023.
