The Guinean Constitutional Court received 8 applications for the presidential election of 11 October.
The deadline for applications for the October presidential election was 1st September.
Only one woman is among the aspirants: Marie Madeleine Dioubaté who will represent the Environmental Party of Guinea (PEG).
Outgoing president Alpha Condé is the candidate of Guinea People’s Assembly (RPG) while Cellou Dalein Diallo will campaign under the banner of the Guinean Democratic Forces’ Union (UFDG).
Sidya Touré is the candidate from Republican Forces Union (UFR).
The other four candidates are Lansana Kouyaté (Hope for National Development Party/PEDN), El-Hadj Papa Koly Kourouma (Generation for Reconciliation, Unity and Progress Party/GRUP), Faya Milimono (Liberal Block/BL) and Georges Ghandy Faraguet (Guinean Union for Democracy and Development/MUGDD).
Alpha Condé won the 2010 presidential election against M. Diallo with 52% of votes after the second round.
The National Independent Electoral Commission (Céni) announced on 10 March that the presidential election would take place on 11 October 2015 and local elections at the end of March 2016. The opposition denounced this inversion of calendar, demanding the organisation of the local elections come first to avoid an additional period of a year being added to the already illegal and illegitimate mandate of the special delegations, administrations appointed by the executive, in the absence of local elections since 2005.
The opposition, organising for many weeks intermittent demonstrations in the streets which resulted in the death of many and tens of injured, feared that these special delegations would promote massive frauds during the presidential election, if the electoral calendar was maintained.
A political dialogue started in the past few months between the power and the opposition nevertheless resulted in an agreement making provision for the opposition to nominate two people to replace two of the Céni’s commissioners who passed away, as well as an audit of the voters register before the presidential.
