With 25.6% of votes during the regional elections, the Islamist party of Prime Minister Abdelilah Benkirane (photo) appears to be the winner of the regional and municipal elections in Morocco.
The Justice and Development Party (Parti de la Justice et du Développement – PJD), in power since 2011, thus maintained its seats and seems to have strengthened its hold on the Moroccan political life. It even came largely ahead in big cities such as Rabat, Casablanca, Marrakech or Tangiers.
The two parties whose leaders are considered close to the king, the Authenticity and Modernity Party (Parti Authenticité et Modernité) and Istiqlal Party, only got respectively 19.4% and 17.5% of votes.
At the end of this consultation, the Islamist Party of Mr. Benkirane, thus gets an advantageous position for the legislative elections next year.
