Burundi: New government list dominated by hardliners from the party in power

Friday, 28 August 2015 15:26

The Burundian president Pierre Nkurunziza announced, in a decree published on 25 August, the first government of his 3rd controversial term, largely dominated by members from the hard line of CNDD-FDD, the party in power.

The new team which will have to manage a country immersed in a grave political crisis following the re-election of Mr. Nkurunziza is particularly marked by the return to the ministry of Public Safety of Alain-Guillaume Bunyoni, considered as one of the key persons of the security system of the regime and a die-hard follower of the head of state. This ex-military man who was part of the Hutu rebellion was the first director of the new Burundian police after the civil war, from 2005 to 2007. He had already held the posts of Public Safety between 2007 and 2011, before becoming Chief of Staff of the civil cabinet of the president till November 2014. Mr. Bunyoni is one of the two principal hardliners of the regime, with General Adolphe Nshimirimana, ex-chief of the Intelligence Agency, murdered on 2 August in Bujumbura.

He replaces Gilbert Nizigama, an ex-police chief, who becomes deputy Director of Staff of the president. General Évariste Ndayishimye, ex-Minister of Interior and Public Safety (2006-2007) then ex-military Director of Staff, was appointed Director of the civil cabinet.

Up until now minister of Justice, a role he has held since 2011, Pascal Barandagiye, now moves the key ministry of Interior, instead of Édouard Nduwimana, elected 2nd vice-president of parliament.
