• LINX to manage Asteroid’s IXPs in Mombasa, Nairobi
• Migration of networks to LINX hubs set by end-2025
• Move supports LINX’s broader African digital expansion strategy
The London Internet Exchange (LINX), an operator of internet exchange points (IXP), announced Monday, September 8, a new cooperation agreement with Asteroid, a global IXP incubator. LINX will take over the management of Asteroid’s interconnection points in Mombasa and Nairobi, strengthening its position in the Kenyan market as part of a broader African expansion strategy.
Under the agreement, client networks currently connected to Asteroid’s platforms will be gradually migrated to LINX’s interconnection hubs by the end of 2025. The transition will be a joint effort between the technical teams of both companies to ensure a seamless process with no service interruptions.
"We feel very privileged to carry on the baton so to speak. We will drive to continue the amazing work Asteroid has achieved in Kenya and look forward to working with their customers on the next step of their interconnection journey," LINX CEO Jennifer Holmes said in an official statement. "LINX’s priority is to continue to support the growth of interconnection in Kenya to the benefit of the local community and the wider global ecosystem."
This partnership follows the inauguration of LINX’s internet exchange point in Ghana about two months ago, marking its third in Africa after its initial two installations in Kenya. The company, which has continental ambitions, also signed a strategic partnership with Africa Data Centres in May 2023. Africa Data Centres operates in six African countries with nine facilities, with plans to expand into a dozen more cities. In May 2025, LINX appointed Patrick Mbogo as its Head of Business Development for Africa.
This expansion aligns with the continent's rising internet traffic, driven by the growing adoption of digital services. LINX's strategy reflects its intention to capitalize on a booming market and the opportunities presented by Africa's digital surge. The company reported a 14% increase in revenue in 2024, reaching 21.8 million pounds (approximately $29.6 million USD), up from 2023.
