Mauritius’ Education Ministry has partnered with Mauritius Telecom to launch an artificial intelligence (AI) platform, mytGPT for Education, for students, teachers, and parents.
The initiative follows a pilot project conducted between August and October 2025, which involved testing the platform on approximately 70 Grade 12 students in three subjects: mathematics, accounting, and physics. Grade 12 is equivalent to the French Première class.
The platform aligns with a global trend where AI is becoming a key tool to boost educational performance, personalize learning paths, and enhance student skills. The new tool serves as an always-accessible educational assistant, providing content tailored to each student's level. It also allows teachers to monitor their classes' progress and specific needs in real time.
Mauritius aims to make AI central to educational inclusion, ensuring every citizen has access to a modern and equitable learning assistant regardless of their background.
The island nation ranks among Africa’s most AI-ready countries. The 2024 Government AI Readiness Index by UK firm Oxford Insights ranked Mauritius first in sub-Saharan Africa with a score of 53.94 out of 100.
However, in a separate ranking focused on countries best prepared for AI talent development, consulting firm Qhala and African AI research platform Qubit Hub placed Mauritius fifth in Africa with a score of 48 out of 100, with Rwanda scoring 46.90 and Kenya 49.70.
