Senegal delays delivery of Bargny-Sendou mineral port to late 2026

In Senegal, the commissioning of the Bargny-Sendou mineral port is now scheduled for late 2026. The update was announced by Senegal Minergy Port, the company in charge of developing the facility, following a meeting with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. The revised timeline marks another adjustment for a project launched in 2017 and initially expected to be delivered in September 2025.

Located about 20 kilometers south of Dakar, the future port platform aims to position itself as one of West Africa’s main hubs for solid and liquid bulk cargo. It will target flows of minerals, phosphates, grains, and hydrocarbons, amid rising logistics needs linked to the country’s extractive and energy sectors.

Under the initial technical specifications, the Bargny-Sendou port will be organized around three terminals. The first will handle liquid cargo, with facilities planned for petroleum product depots and gas storage. The second terminal will be dedicated to mining activities, including phosphates, iron, bauxite, and zircon. The third will accommodate various goods, including on-site bagged grains, oilseeds, metalworking activities, and the production of construction materials.

Over the long term, the platform is expected to have an annual handling capacity of 20 million tons of mineral products, hydrocarbons, and grains, Senegal Minergy Port said. The project forms part of the authorities’ strategy to ease congestion at the port of Dakar while strengthening national logistics capacity to support economic transformation.

At the same time, Senegal is advancing another large-scale port project at Ndayane, which is set to become the country’s first deepwater port. With a cost exceeding $1 billion, the project is also intended to relieve pressure on the Dakar port and has been awarded to Emirati port operator DP World for construction and operation.
