Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Africa Global Logistics Tanzania Ltd to design, build and operate new port facilities at Bagamoyo, local media reported.
The deal covers the construction of three modern berths, marking renewed momentum for the long-delayed deep-water port project, which stalled for years due to a lack of financing.
Under the agreement, AGL will also design and build two additional berths at the port of Dar es Salaam, the country’s main maritime gateway. Bagamoyo, initially awarded in 2013 to China Merchants Holdings International and Oman’s State General Reserve Fund, was halted after Tanzanian authorities deemed parts of the contract unfavorable to national interests.
Bagamoyo’s first phase is now expected to open with 14 of its planned 28 berths. With a 20-meter draft, the port will be able to handle next-generation vessels, including container ships with capacities of up to 25,000 TEUs. Designed to process cargo volumes far higher than those at Dar es Salaam, the project supports Tanzania’s goal of becoming a major regional shipping hub.
The renewed push comes amid rising competition with Kenya’s port of Mombasa. Both ports serve the same strategic hinterland, including Uganda, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Burundi.
