Angola’s state-owned carrier TAAG Angola Airlines took delivery of an Airbus A220-300 last Wednesday. The aircraft, registered D2-TAJ, is configured with 137 seats, including 12 in business class and 125 in economy.
The delivery forms part of TAAG’s 2024–2029 fleet renewal programme, aimed at replacing older aircraft and improving passenger comfort. It also supports a network expansion plan to increase the airline’s fleet to 50 aircraft from about 20. TAAG targets carrying 3 million passengers a year within six years, up from around 1 million in 2022.
On Dec. 1, the airline signed a codeshare agreement with South African Airways to extend its network. The deal will improve connectivity between TAAG’s main routes and key SAA destinations, including Durban, Gqeberha, Cape Town, Harare and Lusaka.
TAAG is expected to play a central role in generating traffic for the new Luanda International Airport, which has an annual capacity of 15 million passengers and 130,000 tonnes of cargo.
The airport project is part of Angola’s broader strategy to develop aviation, tourism, trade and services as drivers of economic diversification away from oil exports.
